About Tyler & the Tynado Foundation

A Life Changed in a Moment

Tyler with the girl who rescued him.

In August 2019, Tyler or “Tynado” as his family affectionately calls him, was just a happy, energetic boy enjoying a summer birthday pool party. Surrounded by laughter and splashes, he was playing on a raft with friends when something suddenly felt wrong. He got off the raft, but his body didn’t respond the way it should. His arms and legs wouldn’t move. He tried to call for help, but no sound came out. In that terrifying moment, Tyler thought to himself, “I guess this is the end of Tyler.” He took a deep breath—and everything went black.

Thanks to the alertness of a brave young girl who noticed something wasn’t right, help came just in time. She saw what others didn’t, that Tyler was in trouble beneath the surface. Her alertness set off a chain of lifesaving actions: she swam down to the bottom of the pool and brought Tyler to the surface, the lifeguard dove in to help, and Tyler’s father performed CPR until emergency responders arrived within four minutes. That day marked the beginning of a new chapter in Tyler’s life—one filled with uncertainty, courage, and resilience.

Tyler was rushed to Boston Children’s Hospital for an overnight stay. One week later, he was diagnosed with epilepsy.

Fast forward one year, Tyler had another seizure. At this point, he told his dad, Steve, “Epilepsy stinks!”. He then asked his dad if he could begin fundraising so that other kids wouldn’t have to deal with epilepsy and maybe they could help find a cure. Maybe they could make a shot for babies so they would never get epilepsy.

Fundraising efforts began immediately with the tremendous support of Steve’s employer, Insperity, and have continued to grow. In 2024, Tyler asked his parents to start a foundation to create epilepsy awareness and find a cure… and so the Tynado Foundation, based on his nickname, was born.
